The part of aging that people don't talk about — and 5 ways to deal with it

For years before her death at age 96, Nancy Lundebjerg's mother underwent a long, slow decline.Arthritis made it hard for Margaret Lundebjerg to get around. After two hip surgeries, she needed a walker when she was out and about.Incontinence was a source of discomfort, as was the need to rely on aides to help her perform daily chores.Little by little, Margaret became frail and isolated.

A Delicious New Year's Resolution

With the holiday season upon us, many people look to set goals for the New Year. Often resolutions have a focus on nutrition and you commonly hear things like "eat less," "use smaller plates" or "drink a glass of water before a meal to help you feel full". Rather than going without, let's think about ways to add more nutrition to our New Year's resolution. This time of year is full of delicious foods; it would be a shame to fill up on a cold glass of water rather than a steaming bowl of stew!

Winter Newsletter | 2017

Our newsletter celebrates the spirit of giving this holiday season. Our communities have been spreading Christmas cheer across British Columbia.

Winter is a busy season - be sure to read our newsletter to find out everything that has been happening in our communities. Sun Pointe gets high reviews from Seniors Advocate Survey, Shannon Oaks Elves showed up at London Drugs and celebrity Residents interviewed for our Home for the Holiday series - it's Christmas at Baptist Housing and we have so much to be thankful for. Not to mention a delicious New Years' Resolution!

Youth in detention gets another 'mom' for Christmas

In 1982, the first year Evelyn Florendo volunteered to cook Christmas dinner for kids in custody at the Burnaby Youth Detention Centre, one girl in particular caught her attention.

"She was only 15. She was very busy, working so hard, helping me, serving the food, cleaning up the food," said Florendo, now 81. Florendo asked a guard for the girl's name, and approached her at the end of the dinner. "I said, whatever leftovers you want, you can take them to your room."

Senior Elves shop for Seniors

On December 15th at 1PM, a bus load of Elves flooded London Drugs at Market Crossing to do some shopping for seniors in need. Fifteen of our Shannon Oaks Residents chose to participate in London Drug's Stocking Stuffers for Seniors program. Each Elf selected a name card and shopped for gifts that matched the wish list.

Seniors rate Kelowna care homes and Sun Pointe Shines

More than half of Interior Health residential care home residents in Kelowna rate their overall quality of care as excellent or very good, while only 37 per cent of residents say they can bathe as often as they like, according to a report by the Office of the Seniors Advocate.

Isobel Mackenzie, B.C.'s seniors advocate, released a 52-page report billed as the largest survey of its kind in Canada of elderly people living in B.C.'s residential care facilities in September, and recently she released detailed survey results from every care facility in the province.
