The Heights at Mt. View is Baptist Housing’s newest housing development. This community, currently under construction in Saanich, BC is a 7-storey, 260-suite building which provides complex care, and will replace the suites at two previous Baptist Housing locations in Victoria, Mount Edwards Court Care Home and Central Care Home.

This transition represents an exciting opportunity as Residents make the transition from one community to another. The design of The Heights has been inspired by Resident-centered care, the current best practice in senior living. The Heights at Mt. View has integrated a number of innovative design approaches based upon principles of the housing model of care and supports independence and the best quality of life in old age.

We are excited to announce that Baptist Housing has commissioned the Gerontology Research Centre of Simon Fraser University to undertake an evaluation of The Heights during this important development. The purpose of the two year longitudinal evaluation is to determine if and how a housing model of care, as opposed to the previous institutional model of care, can contribute to positive outcomes for Residents, Family Members and Team Members.

The results of the research evaluation will provide research evidence for establishing how the built environment can best support the development of home-like care settings for older adults transitioning into long-term care. The findings will be significant for informing the aging-in-community agenda, in terms of how to ensure seniors are provided with everyday supports to facilitate independence, autonomy and well-being whilst residing in long-term care.

Once the evaluation protocol is finalized, the delivery of a final report is expected on February 28, 2016.
